A touch of history
Mount Tabor plays an important role in the history of Israel thanks to it strategic position. The mountain has been the scene of many Biblical stories such as the battle between the armies of the Israelites, led by Deborah and Barak and the Canaanite chariots, recorded in Judges 4 & 5.
Mount Tabor is also often identified as the place where Jesus performed the miracle of Transfiguration in the presence of Peter, James and John, as described in Matthew 17. Today, it is the site of one of Israel’s most exquisite churches: the Basilica of Transfiguration, a Franciscan sanctuary built in the 1920’s over the ruins of an ancient Byzantine chapel dating back to the 5th or 6th century AD. The smaller Greek Orthodox church of Elias is also located on the summit.
